Israeli opposition leader Lapid rallies behind Iran operation, after months of criticizing Netanyahu
Roughly 24 hours before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a blistering assault on Iran, Israel's opposition was scheming to bring down his government.
Now, just days into the ongoing operation against Iran, the opposition has closed ranks behind the effort, suspending months of bitter criticism against Netanyahu and his handling of the war in Gaza.
It's a sharp about-face for a constellation of parties that have criticized Netanyahu throughout the war for what they have charged is his politically motivated decision-making.
“It’s not the right moment to do politics,” opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yair Lapid told The Associated Press on Monday in his first international media interview since the start of the operation against Iran.
Iranians seek temporary refuge in neighboring Turkey as the conflict with Israel escalates
After crossing into Turkey from Iran on Monday, Shirin Talebi was anxiously waiting for her children and grandchildren to arrive from Tehran at the same border point. The family are planning to stay for a month or two in Turkey, seeking temporary refuge from the escalating Israel-Iran conflict.
Observers in Turkey say the arrivals have increased since Israel on Friday launched strikes targeting Iran's nuclear program and military officials. However, Turkish officials dismiss social media reports of a large-scale influx of refugees.
Turkey, which shares a 569-kilometer (348-mile) -long border with Iran, has expressed deep concern over the escalating Iran-Israel exchanges. There are fears in Turkey that a prolonged conflict could threaten Turkey’s own security, cause energy disruptions and lead to refugee flows.
“I’m here because of safety. They are bombing. My children have small children of their own,” said Talebi, speaking at the Gurbulak-Bazargan crossing after arriving from the Iranian city of Urmia.
“Hopefully, it is over in one or two months so we can return to our country,” she said.
Iran has retaliated to Israel's barrages by firing waves of ballistic missiles at Israel and the conflict is now in its fourth day.
Netanyahu says killing Iran's supreme leader would 'end the conflict'
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested Monday that assassinating Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would "end the conflict" between the two arch-foes.
"It's not going to escalate the conflict, it's going to end the conflict," Netanyahu told ABC News in an interview when asked about reports that US President Donald Trump vetoed an Israeli plan to kill the supreme leader out of concern it would intensify the Iran-Israel showdown.
"The 'forever war' is what Iran wants, and they're bringing us to the brink of nuclear war," Netanyahu said. "In fact, what Israel is doing is preventing this, bringing an end to this aggression, and we can only do so by standing up to the forces of evil."
Iran vows to 'pummel' Israel until attacks stop
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Monday that Iranian forces will "pummel" Israel until the attacks against the Islamic republic stop.
"Our powerful Armed Forces are making clear to the world that the war criminals hiding in shelters in Tel Aviv will not go unpunished for their crimes," said Araghchi in a post on X. "We will continue to pummel the cowards for as long as needed to make sure that they are no longer firing at our people," he added.
Israeli strike on Iranian state TV fills studio with dust and debris during live broadcast
An Iranian state television reporter had to stop a live broadcast Monday when an explosion occurred an hour after Israel issued a warning to evacuate the area of Tehran where the TV studios are located.
The reporter for the Islamic Republic of Iran News Network said the studio was filling with dust after “the sound of aggression against the homeland, the sound of aggression against truth and righteousness.”
Anchor Sahar Emami rushed off-camera as the screen behind her cut out, and people were heard saying “Allahu akbar," the Arabic phrase for God is great.
The broadcast quickly switched to pre-recorded programs. Soon, Emami came back live from another studio and was seen speaking with another anchor. She said that “bodies of reporters” were at the site of the initial broadcast, and images showed smoke and flames in the sky.
Israel’s defense minister took credit for the attack.
“The Iranian regime’s propaganda and incitement broadcasting authority was attacked by the IDF after a widespread evacuation of the area’s residents,” Israel Katz said in a statement. “We will strike the Iranian dictator everywhere.”
An hour earlier, the Israeli military had issued an evacuation warning affecting up to 330,000 people in a part of central Tehran that includes the country’s state TV and police headquarters, as well as three large hospitals. The IDF has issued similar evacuation warnings for civilians in parts of Gaza and Lebanon ahead of strikes.
The warning came on the fourth day of the conflict, when the Israeli military claimed it had achieved air superiority above the Iranian capital and could fly over the city without facing major threats.
Iran FM says US could stop Israel attacks with 'one phone call'
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Monday that the United States could stop Israel's attacks on the Islamic republic with "one phone call".
"If President (Donald) Trump is genuine about diplomacy and interested in stopping this war, next steps are consequential. Israel must halt its aggression, and absent a total cessation of military aggression against us, our responses will continue," Araghchi said in a post on X.
"It takes one phone call from Washington to muzzle someone like (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu. That may pave the way for a return to diplomacy," he added.
Iran condemns Israeli attack on state TV as 'war crime'
Iran condemned Israel's attack on a state TV building in Tehran on Monday as a "war crime", and called on the UN Security Council to take action.
The strike on the offices of IRIB during a live broadcast was a "a wicked act" and a "war crime", said foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei. "The UNSC must act now to stop the genocidal aggressor from committing further atrocities against our people," he added.
Israel military reports missiles fired from Iran
The Israeli military on Monday said Iran fired a fresh salvo of missiles targeting the north of the country where residents have been advised to take cover.
"A short while ago, sirens sounded in several areas in northern Israel following the identification of missiles launched from Iran toward the State of Israel," the army said in a statement.

G7 leaders want to contain the Israel-Iran conflict, as Trump calls for talks between the countries
The Group of Seven summit began in Canada on Monday with world leaders scrambling to contain the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program, with U.S. President Donald Trump reiterating his call for the two nations to start negotiating.
“They should talk and they should talk immediately,” he told reporters.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said all G7 leaders agree that they “have to find a way to de-escalate the situation” in the Middle East because the conflict between Israel and Iran risks inflaming the “tinderbox” of Gaza and hurting the global economy.
Starmer said he'd spoken to Trump about the issue, adding that "the risk of the conflict escalating is obvious, I think, and the implications, not just for the region but globally are really immense, so the focus has to be on de-escalation.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told reporters Monday ahead of the summit beginning in the Canadian Rocky Mountains that Germany is planning to draw up a final communique proposal on the Israel-Iran conflict that will stress that “Iran must under no circumstances be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons-capable material.”
But as Trump met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, he also stressed that it was a mistake to remove Russia from the organization in 2014 and that doing so had destabilized the world. He also suggested it would be a good idea to add China to the G7.
The U.S. president also seemed to put a greater priority on his planned emphasis on addressing his grievances with other nations' trade policies.
“Our primary focus will be trade,” Trump said of his talks with Carney.
Trump says Iran should negotiate 'before it's too late'
US President Donald Trump said Monday that Iran was not winning its conflict with Israel and should re-enter negotiations "before it's too late."
"They have to make a deal, and it's painful for both parties, but I'd say Iran is not winning this war, and they should talk, and they should talk immediately, before it's too late," Trump told reporters at a G7 summit in Canada.
Iran state TV resumes live broadcast after Israeli attack
Iran state TV resumed live coverage after Israel's attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) building on Monday.
"The Zionist regime the enemy of the Iranian nation minutes ago conducted a military operation against the Islamic Republic of Iran news network", part of IRIB, said a senior official at the broadcasting service Hassan Abedini. "The regime (Israel) was unaware of the fact that the voice of the Islamic revolution and the great Iran will not be silenced with a military operation."
Iranian state-run television halts live broadcast after Israeli strike
Iran’s state-run news agency reported Monday that state-run television abruptly stopped a live broadcast after an Israeli strike.
During the broadcast, an Iranian state television reporter said the studio was filling with dust after “the sound of aggression against the homeland.”
Suddenly, an explosion occurred, cutting the screen behind her as she hurried off camera. The broadcast quickly switched to prerecorded programs.
An hour earlier, Israel had issued a warning the evacuate the area of Iran’s capital where the TV studios are located.

Iran state TV, radio 'about to disappear': Israel defence minister
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Monday that Iran's state television and radio were "about to disappear", after an evacuation warning was issued for the district in Tehran where the broadcaster is based.
"The Iranian propaganda and incitement megaphone is about to disappear," he said in a statement. "Evacuation of nearby residents has begun."
Israel's military urged residents in a portion of the capital's northern District 3 to evacuate "immediately" on Monday, saying it intended to carry out air strikes there.
"In the coming hours, the (Israeli military) will operate in the area, as it has in recent days throughout Tehran, to strike military infrastructure of the Iranian regime," the military said in a post on X in Persian.
The area marked for evacuation is an upmarket part of the Iranian capital home to at least four hospitals and medical centres, a major police building and state broadcaster IRIB.
It also houses several embassies, including those of Qatar, Oman and Kuwait, as well as UN offices and the Agence France-Presse bureau.
Earlier Monday, the Israeli army said that it had achieved "total air superiority in the skies over Tehran".
The toxic conflict: UN nuclear agency flags possible radiological risks inside Iran's Natanz facility; no radiation leak outside
As Israel targeted Iran’s main nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz amid escalating conflict, head of the UN nuclear watchdog agency said that there is a possibility of both radiological and chemical contamination there. However, he asserted that the radiation levels outside the complex are normal.
Expressing concern over whether uranium is inhaled or ingested, International Atomic Energy Agency director-general Rafael Mariano Grossi said that it will pose a significant danger. However, he added that risk can be managed with effective measures.
Read moreUS warship reported heading toward Mideast as Iran, Israel fight
The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz was leaving Southeast Asia on Monday after cancelling plans to dock in Vietnam, amid reports it is headed to the Middle East to boost the US presence as Israel and Iran do battle.
At 13:45 GMT, the carrier was traveling through the Malacca Strait toward the Indian Ocean, according to Marine Traffic, a ship-tracking site.
A Vietnamese government official confirmed to AFP that a planned reception aboard the USS Nimitz on June 20, as part of the ship's expected June 19-23 visit to Danang, had been cancelled.
The official shared a letter from the US embassy announcing that the Defense Department was cancelling the event due to "an emergent operational requirement."
The US Embassy in Hanoi declined to comment to AFP, as did a spokesman for the Nimitz.
The movement of one of the world's largest warships came on day four of the escalating air war between Israel and Iran, with no end in sight despite international calls for de-escalation.
Israel's strikes have so far killed at least 224 people, including top military commanders, nuclear scientists and civilians, according to Iranian authorities.
In retaliation, Iran said it had struck Israel with a salvo of missiles and warned of "effective, targeted and more devastating operations" to come.
US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee on Monday said that Iran's missile barrage had lightly damaged a building used by the American embassy in Tel Aviv.
Israeli military warns residents in part of Iran's capital to evacuate ahead of Israeli strikes

UN nuclear agency warns of possible contamination inside Iran's Natanz site after Israeli strikes
The head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency said Monday that there is a possibility of both radiological and chemical contamination within Iran’s main nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz following Israeli strikes, although radiation levels outside the complex are presently normal.
The radiation poses a significant danger if uranium is inhaled or ingested, International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi said.
The risk can be effectively managed with appropriate protective measures, such as using respiratory protection devices while inside the facilities, Grossi said.
“The level of radioactivity outside the Natanz site has remained unchanged and at normal levels, indicating no external radiological impact to the population or the environment from this event,” he said.
Poland prepares to evacuate nationals from Israel
Poland is preparing to evacuate 200 of its citizens from Israel to escape the escalating conflict with Iran, the foreign ministry in Warsaw said Monday.
"We have implemented an evacuation plan for Polish citizens stranded in Israel through Amman," the capital of neighbouring Jordan, Deputy Foreign Minister Henryka Moscicka-Dendys told reporters.
The Poles would be driven by bus to Jordan and from there put on an official plane to Warsaw, with the first flight happening in 48 hours at the earliest, she said.
"I assume we will be ready in the next few dozen hours, and the evacuation will only concern people who are stranded in Israel as tourists or for short stays," she added.
Iranian Nobel laureates, Cannes winner urge halt to Iran-Israel conflict
Leading Iranian activists and filmmakers on Monday called for an end to hostilities between Iran and Israel, urging Tehran to stop the conflict by halting its enrichment of uranium.
"We demand the immediate halt of uranium enrichment by the Islamic Republic, the cessation of military hostilities, an end to attacks on vital infrastructure in both Iran and Israel, and the stopping of massacres of civilians in both countries," said the activists in an op-ed in French newspaper Le Monde.
The signatories included Nobel peace prize winners Shirin Ebadi and Narges Mohammadi, as well as the winner of the top prize at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival Jafar Panahi and his fellow director Mohammad Rassoulof.
Khamenei, Iran's political survivor, faces ultimate test
Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has weathered a series of challenges but Israel's unprecedented strikes mark his most serious crisis yet, threatening both the clerical system he leads and his own physical survival.
Khamenei, Iran's top leader since the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, has ruled in the face of sanctions, near constant international tensions as well as protests that were ruthlessly repressed, most recently the 2022-2023 women-led uprising.
With Khamenei aged 86, the issue of succession was already looming large in Iran. But his moves now will have a decisive impact on the future on the system of which he has been a pillar since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that ousted the shah.
Meanwhile, his own physical survival could be at stake, with a senior American official saying Donald Trump rejected an Israeli plan to kill Khamenei but Israel is still not ruling out such a move.
"Khamenei is at the twilight of his rule, at the age 86, and already much of the daily command of the regime is not up to him but to various factions who are vying for the future," said Arash Azizi, senior fellow at Boston University.
"This process was already underway and the current war only accelerates it," he told AFP.
Putin, Erdogan urged 'immediate' end to Israel-Iran conflict in call: Kremlin
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Monday for an "immediate" end to fighting between Israel and Iran in a phone conversation, the Kremlin said.

Israel Iran War News LIVE updates: Oil prices fall even as Israel-Iran strikes extend into fourth day
Stocks rose and oil prices pulled back on Monday as fears of a wider Middle East conflict eased even as Israel and Iran pounded each other with missiles for a fourth day.
The dollar and safe-haven gold declined slightly.
"European shares were surprisingly resilient against a backdrop of uncertainty," said Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell.
"The Middle East conflict remains a fluid situation and there is the potential for markets to still experience sudden jolts if the tension escalates further," he cautioned.
Erdogan tells Putin that Israel threatens regional security
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Israel of threatening security in the Middle East, which he said cannot tolerate another war, in a phone call with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Monday, his office said.
Erdogan was quoted saying: "The spiral of violence that began with Israel's attacks on Iran has put the security of the entire region at risk, (and) that the lawless attitude of the (Israeli premier Benjamin) Netanyahu government poses a clear threat to the international system, and that the region cannot tolerate a new war."
Erdogan says Turkey ready to facilitate ending Iran-Israel conflict
Turkey is ready to play a "facilitating role" to end the conflict between arch foes Israel and Iran, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told his Iranian counterpart in a phone call on Monday, his office said.
During the call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Erdogan said: "Turkey is ready to play a facilitating role for the immediate end of the conflict and return to nuclear negotiations," according to his office.
Erdogan, who stepped up diplomatic calls on the conflict over the weekend, has slammed Israel's "banditry" and said Israel was seeking to drag the world into "disaster" after a wave of strikes on Iran.
Turkey has previously hosted peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.
Pakistan shuts border with Iran: Provincial officials
Pakistan has closed all its border crossings with neighbouring Iran for an indefinite period, provincial officials said on Monday, as Israel and Iran trade intense strikes and threaten further attacks.

Israel condemns black partition walls around its pavilions at Paris Air Show
French authorities ordered black partition walls erected around some Israeli defence industry exhibits at the Paris Air Show, a move denounced by Israel's defence ministry, which demanded an immediate reversal.
A French appeals court had ruled Friday against activist groups who sought to block Israeli companies from participating in the show due to the war in Gaza. The Paris Air Show, held at Le Bourget north of Paris, is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious events for the aerospace and defence industry.
The black walls appeared overnight ahead of the show’s opening Monday, visually isolating Israeli booths from dozens of other international exhibitors. The Israeli defence ministry said the move followed a last-minute demand from organisers to remove offensive weapons systems from display — a request they rejected.
“The French are hiding behind supposedly political considerations to exclude Israeli offensive weapons from an international exhibition — weapons that compete with French industries,” the ministry said in a statement Monday, calling the action “ugly and improper.”
Gaza rescuers say 20 killed by Israeli gunfire at aid site
Gaza's civil defence agency said that 20 people waiting for aid in the south of the Palestinian territory were killed by Israeli troops on Monday.
Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that "20 martyrs and more than 200 wounded by occupation gunfire... were transferred to the Red Cross field hospital in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Yunis, then to Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis".
He added that the people had been waiting to reach an aid centre in Rafah "when the occupation forces opened fire" near the Al-Alam roundabout.
When asked by AFP, the Israeli military said it was checking the reports.
Israeli restrictions on media in Gaza and the difficulties of access on the ground mean AFP is unable to independently verify the casualty tolls provided by the civil defence agency.
Dozens of Palestinians have been killed while trying to reach Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) distribution points since the US- and Israel-backed organisation began operating in late May, according to the civil defence agency.
The rescue agency reported more than 20 killed on Saturday.
Tehran's Grand Bazaar shut amid ongoing Israeli attacks: AFP report

The main gate of the bazaar was fully shut, with streets largely deserted and most shops across the capital also closed except for a few grocery stores, the journalist added.
'No indication' of attack on underground section of Iranian nuclear site: IAEA
The head of the UN nuclear watchdog said Monday there was "no indication of a physical attack" on an underground section of Iran's Natanz uranium enrichment site following Israeli strikes that destroyed the plant's above-ground part.
It comes after Israel last week began launching strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, alleging that that the country was seeking to develop nuclear weapons -- an accusation Tehran has always denied.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said that a key above-ground component of the Natanz site where Iran was producing uranium enriched to up to 60 percent -- short of the 90 percent required to produce weapons-grade material -- had been destroyed in the attacks.
Addressing an extraordinary board meeting on Monday, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said there has been "no additional damage" at the Natanz site since Friday.
Radioactivity levels outside the Natanz plant "remained unchanged and at normal levels, indicating no external radiological impact", Grossi added.
Furthermore, there has been "no indication of a physical attack on the underground cascade hall containing part of the Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant and the main Fuel Enrichment Plant", he said in his statement.
"However, the loss of power to the cascade hall may have damaged the centrifuges there," he added.
Israel Iran War News LIVE updates: Israel army says destroyed 'one third' of Iran missile sites
Israel's military on Monday said it had destroyed one third of Iran's surface-to-surface missile launchers, as strikes between the two arch foes raged for a fourth day.
Since the start of Israeli operations against Iran on Friday, "more than 120 missile launchers -- constituting one third of the Iranian regime's total launchers -- have been destroyed," military spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin said in a statement.
Overnight, around 50 fighter jets and aircraft had "identified and struck missile storage sites, (and) surface-to-surface missile launchers that were ready for launch toward the state of Israel," the statement added.
In one instance, more than 20 surface-to-surface missiles were destroyed as they were being prepared for launch in central Iran, where missile-launching infrastructure is focused, the military said.
During a press conference, Defrin also said that Israel now had "total air superiority in the skies over Tehran".
Israel Iran War News LIVE updates: Israel says deports last three Gaza flotilla activists to Jordan
Israel said Monday it had deported the last three remaining activists from an aid flotilla that attempted to reach the war-torn Gaza Strip last week.
"The last three participants remaining from the 'Selfie Yacht' (flotilla) were transferred this morning to Jordan via the Allenby Crossing," the foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that they included one Dutch and two French nationals.
The Madleen, a boat carrying 12 activists including climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, was intercepted by the Israeli military last Monday as it approached Israeli waters.
Thunberg and three other activists agreed to be deported immediately, while eight others were detained by Israeli authorities, appearing before an immigration tribunal on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, the foreign ministry said those remaining in Israel would be flown to their home countries later that week.
Five of the activists, including Rima Hassan, a member of the European Parliament from the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) party, who is of Palestinian descent, left Thursday.
The remaining three were scheduled to leave Friday morning but Israel closed its airspace after it began striking military and nuclear targets in Iran.

Israel-Iran War: Israel intercepts over 100 Iranian UAVs
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Monday that it intercepted over 100 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) sent from Iran. "Iran sent more than 100 UAVs at Israel. We intercepted them," the IDF stated on X, emphasizing that "All Israelis are targets for the Iranian regime. All Israelis are heroes to us."
This development comes amid a rapidly escalating direct confrontation between Israel and Iran. The Times of Israel, citing the IRGC-linked Tasnim news agency, reported that Iranian security forces located a three-story Israeli drone factory inside Iran, with Tehran believing more such sites exist.
In previous strikes on Friday, Israel reportedly used explosive-carrying quadcopter drones and other sophisticated equipment, believed to have been smuggled into Iran, for precision attacks on Iranian nuclear scientists, military leaders, anti-aircraft batteries, and surface-to-surface missiles. The IDF also confirmed striking a surface-to-surface missile launcher in Tehran and an Iranian refueling aircraft at Mashhad Airport in eastern Iran, approximately 2,300 km from Israel, marking what the IDF termed "the longest-range strike conducted since the beginning of Operation Rising Lion."
The IDF also noted that Hamas triggered sirens in southern Israel with a projectile launch from Gaza, reminding that "We are still in a multi-front war." Israeli TV stations speculate that the air force's extensive strikes are aimed at preventing an anticipated Iranian missile barrage. The IDF Home Front Command has instructed Israelis to remain close to shelters.
Israel Iran War: Israeli army says strikes Iran surface-to-surface missile sites
The Israeli military said early Monday that it was striking surface-to-surface missile sites in Iran, its latest move in three days of escalating conflict between the rival states.

She also voiced strong concern over Iran's nuclear program, stating, "Europe has always been clear: Iran can never acquire a nuclear weapon. There is an urgent need for a negotiated solution."
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomed US President Donald Trump’s call for Israel and Iran to make a deal, according to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency.
Erdogan stressed the "irreversible economic, civilian damage" for both sides and emphasized the necessity for de-escalation.
