AUS vs SA, WTC Final: Steve Smith becomes first and only Australian to achieve unwanted feat in loss to South Africa

Steve Smith has made an unwanted record, becoming the first Australian cricketer to be part of two ICC final defeats. He experienced the first loss in the 2010 T20 World Cup against England and recently in the 2025 World Test Championship final against South Africa. Despite Australia's dominance in global finals, this defeat marks a significant disappointment for Smith.

In 2010, a 20-year-old leg-spinning all-rounder, Smith had a limited role in Australia’s campaign as they fell short against a Kevin Pietersen-inspired England side.Fifteen years later, as a senior statesman of the Australian team, Smith was hoping to add another ICC title to his already glittering resume. However, South Africa’s historic victory at Lord’s, ending their 27-year trophy drought, denied him that opportunity, handing Australia only their second defeat in an ICC final in over a decade.
