G7 Summit 2025 Live Updates: PM Modi leaves for Croatia after concluding 'productive' Canada visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Canada on Monday to participate in the G7 summit in Kananaskis, marking his first visit to the country in ten years.

PM Modi is currently on a four-day tour covering three nations — Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia. After completing the first leg of his trip in Cyprus, he went to Canada at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

This was PM Modi's sixth consecutive appearance at the G7 summit.

PM Modi also held a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit. His visit came a little over a month after India's Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attacks.

The Prime Minister last visited Canada in 2015, a trip that helped elevate India-Canada relations to a strategic partnership.

In 2024, bilateral trade in goods between the two countries reached USD 8.6 billion, with India exporting goods worth USD 4.2 billion and importing USD 4.4 billion. Trade in services stood at USD 14.3 billion, with India’s exports valued at USD 2.5 billion and imports at USD 11.8 billion.

The G7 summit takes place against a backdrop of escalating global tensions, including the intensifying conflict between Iran and Israel and trade disputes driven by US President Donald Trump's tariff policies.

Canada took over the G7’s rotating presidency on January 1, 2025. This year’s gathering marks the 50th anniversary of the G7 summit.

India, Canada agree to designate new high commissioners

India and Canada have reached an agreement to appoint new high commissioners, aiming to restore normal diplomatic services for citizens and businesses in both nations.

During the G7 Leaders' Summit on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney engaged in bilateral talks.

The Canadian Prime Minister's office released a statement noting that both leaders confirmed the significance of Canada-India relations founded on mutual respect, legal frameworks, and commitment to sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"The leaders agreed to designate new high commissioners, with a view to returning to regular services to citizens and businesses in both countries," the statement said.
The discussions encompassed longstanding people-to-people connections, Indo-Pacific collaborations, and substantial trade relations between the two nations, including joint ventures in economic development, supply chains, and energy transition.

Carney addressed G7 priorities, including cross-border criminal activities, security matters, and international order. The statement indicated that both leaders explored possibilities for enhanced cooperation in technology, digital transformation, food security, and critical minerals.

In October 2023, India withdrew six Canadian diplomats and recalled High Commissioner Sanjay Verma and select officials from Canada. This action followed India's firm rejection of Ottawa's claims connecting the envoy to investigations regarding the death of Sikh extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, leading to deteriorated diplomatic relations.

Canada identified Verma as relevant to their investigation of Nijjar's June 2023 death. Nijjar, a Canadian national, was classified as a Khalistani terrorist by India. India recalled Verma and five other diplomats before Canada could proceed with further measures.

"This is the pits. This is the most unprofessional approach to a bilateral relation. There are diplomatic tools available in the hands of a diplomat. Those tools could have been used" instead of seeking to interrogate a country's top envoy and other diplomats, Verma stated in a PTI Video interview.

PM Modi in Canada for G-7 Summit, says will highlight priorities of global south

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Calgary on Tuesday to attend the G-7 Outreach Summit, where he said India would underscore the priorities of the Global South. “Will be meeting various leaders at the summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South,” Modi said in a statement ahead of the meetings.

PM Modi to visit Croatia with EU trade on agenda

PM Modi will visit Croatia on Wednesday, the first time an Indian prime minister has toured the Balkan nation, in a sign of increasing ties with the European Union.
PM Modi will visit the EU member on his way back from the G7 Summit in Canada, following an earlier stop in Cyprus.

Croatian newspaper Vecernji List reported on Tuesday that a key focus of discussions will be a proposed trade route between Europe, the Middle East and India -- an investment touted to rival Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative.

"As the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Croatia, it will open new avenues for bilateral cooperation," PM Modi said in a statement ahead of the trip.

He will meet Croatian counterpart Andrej Plenkovic and President Zoran Milanovic in Zagreb during a visit that was initially scheduled for mid-May, but got pushed back because of an escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan.

Setback for 'self-styled Vishwaguru's huglomacy': Cong dig at Modi after Trump leaves G7 Summit

The Congress on Tuesday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi after US President Donald Trump left the G7 Summit in Canada a day earlier, saying it is a "setback for self-styled Vishwaguru's huglomacy".

It also asked why the prime minister and the external affairs minister are "silent on this outrageous American outreach to Pakistan", referring to Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir's visit to the US.

"President Trump has left the G7 Summit a day before the G7 outreach with eight other countries that includes India begins. A setback for self-styled Vishwaguru's Huglomacy," AICC general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X.

The Congress has been taking swipes at Modi giving "hugs" to foreign heads of states during his meetings with them at international or bilateral engagements, using the term "huglomacy" for it.

In another post, Ramesh wrote: "So now it can no longer be denied by the drumbeaters of the PM and the BJP's troll army. The man whose incendiary, inflammatory, and provocative remarks were directly linked to the Pahalgam terror attacks is now officially in Washington DC."

"The question we had asked earlier needs to be repeated: what is America up to by hosting Asim Munir in this manner? Why are the Prime Minister and the External Affairs Minister silent on this outrageous American outreach to Pakistan?" he added.

Trump abruptly left the Group of Seven summit Monday, departing a day early as the conflict between Israel and Iran intensified and the US leader declared that Tehran should be evacuated "immediately".

World leaders had gathered in Canada with the specific goal of helping to defuse a series of global pressure points, only to be disrupted by a showdown over Iran's nuclear programme that could escalate in dangerous and uncontrollable ways. Israel launched an aerial bombardment campaign against Iran four days ago.

Vancouver lawmaker hails G7 invite to PM Modi says, "Canada could do nothing but benefit"

Canadian lawyer and MLA for Vancouver-Quilchena in British Columbia, Dallas Brodie, has welcomed PM Narendra Modi's G7 Summit invite, calling it a chance to improve Canada-India ties.

She highlighted India's value as a democratic nation with a vast, educated, and motivated population, adding, "Canada could do nothing but benefit from a positive relationship with India."

G7 Summit: What's not being discussed at G7 as Trump shapes agenda

Gender equality, climate change, biodiversity, poverty, health, gay rights and more -- the list of issues missing at the Canada G7 from past summits is long.

The G7 gathering has been carefully planned to ensure US President Donald Trump agreed to attend at all and Canada is keen to avoid a public dust-up.

Official agenda items are the global economic outlook and energy security, with organizers naming priorities as critical mineral supply chains and AI adoption, as well as "international peace and security."

Last year's Group of Seven summit in Italy, when Joe Biden was US president, ended with a joint declaration promising better ties with Africa, action on poverty, and determination to tackle "the triple crisis of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss."

All of us around this table are reinforcing our militaries and security services for the new world: Carney

Addressing G7 leaders, Canadian PM Mark Carney said, "We have to change with the times and to build a better world. And some of you, such as you, Mr President (Donald Trump), have anticipated these massive changes and are taking bold measures to address them. All of us around this table are reinforcing our militaries and security services for the new world. But we all know that there can be no security without economic prosperity and no prosperity without resilience. And in a world where shocks flow across the borders, that resilience comes from cooperation, cooperation that starts around this table, cooperation that can lead to a new era of prosperity, energy security and critical minerals, artificial intelligence, quantum, combating human smuggling and transnational repression. So we will have open, frank discussions over the course of the next two days. We might not agree on absolutely every issue, but where we will cooperate, we will make an enormous difference."

G7 Summit Live: G7 leaders press Trump on tariffs amid trade war concerns

World leaders at the Group of Seven (G7) summit urged US President Donald Trump to de-escalate his trade war, warning it risks global economic stability. Despite efforts by host Canada to avoid provoking Trump, leaders pressed him to reverse plans for even steeper tariffs, potentially beginning next month.

A senior German official, speaking anonymously, stated, "Several participants asked to end the tariff dispute as soon as possible. They argued that this dispute weakens the G7's economies and in the end will only strengthen China." The six other G7 nations reportedly told Trump his protectionist policies were "damaging to ourselves."

While most G7 countries face a 10% baseline tariff from the US, with Europe and Japan also hit with additional levies on cars, steel, and aluminium, Britain finalised a trade deal with the US to avoid deeper tariffs.

Trump, after meeting British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, displayed signed documents for the new trade accord, which humorously spilled onto the ground.

The invitation and visit have sparked a wave of enthusiasm among people of Indian origin living in Canada, many of whom are hopeful that the high-level engagement will pave the way for improved bilateral ties.

Tarun Jain, an IT professional based in Toronto, told IANS, "Ever since the Canadian Prime Minister has invited PM Narendra Modi, there is a lot of enthusiasm in the Indian community. We still cannot believe that he is coming."

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday he believed Group of Seven leaders meeting in Canada were united in wanting de-escalation between Israel and Iran.

"I do think there's a consensus for de-escalation," Starmer told reporters at the summit in the Canadian Rockies.

"Obviously, what we need to do today is to bring that together and to be clear about how it is to be brought about," he said.

"But the risk of the conflict escalating is obvious, I think, and the implications -- not just for the region but globally -- are really immense, so the focus has to be on de-escalation," he said.

Security teams have erected "fence barriers around locations where attractants (food) are present, including the use of electric bear fence enclosures."

She said fencing was a minimum eight feet (2.4 meters) high to ensure guest safety as part of a multi-pronged operation to prevent "close encounters" with wildlife.

G7 Summit Live: Zelenskyy says to discuss buying US weapons with Trump

Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday said that he will discuss buying US weapons with Donald Trump at the G7 summit, but added that US military aid was not on the agenda.

"We are not talking to America today about new assistance. Indeed, one of the issues I will discuss with President Trump at the meeting is the defence package that Ukraine is ready to buy," Zelenskyy said during a visit to Vienna, from where he was to travel to Canada for this week's G7 summit.

The Ukrainian president, who has overseen his country's fightback against Russian forces for more than three years, said that "I can't imagine and I don't want to imagine... how to live without and fight without the help of the United States".

He added: "I think we all have to work to make sure that the alliance between America and Europe doesn't fall apart."

Zelenskyy also said that he viewed the G7 summit as a "very important" opportunity to see "what kind of pressure we can all exert to stop (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, so that he stops the fire, stops the war".

He said that "we will discuss frozen Russian assets with the leaders, and we will also discuss sanctions".

The Group of Seven (G7) is an informal forum of some of the world’s most advanced economies — France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy, and Canada, along with the European Union. The bloc convenes annually to address key global economic and political challenges.

India has been part of eleven G7 Outreach sessions so far, including summits hosted by France (2003, 2019), the UK (2005, 2021), Russia (2006), Germany (2007, 2022), Japan (2008, 2023), Italy (2009, 2024), and now Canada.

Key priorities at this year’s summit include: ‘Protecting our communities and the world’ — focusing on peace, security, countering foreign interference and transnational crime, and improving coordinated wildfire responses; ‘Building energy security and accelerating the digital transition’ — strengthening critical mineral supply chains and harnessing artificial intelligence and quantum technologies to drive economic growth; and ‘Securing the partnerships of the future’ — attracting large-scale private investment to develop resilient infrastructure, generate high-paying jobs, and open up competitive global markets.
